School Celebrates On the 75th Anniversary of the Quit India Movement on Monday

Monday 14 August 2017

India is an ancient nation. As such, we have too much history. We are also a nation that is changing and modernising very fast. As a nation modernises, it starts shedding its old features and also losing memory of them.
Sometimes similar is happening to the Quit India Movement, whose 75th anniversary we are commemorating this year.
Very few, people know that the slogan of Quit India was coined by Dr. Yusuf Meher Ali. The Quit India Movement or India August Movement was a movement launched at the Bombay session of the All India Congress Committee by Mahatma Gandhi on 8th August 1942, during world war-II, demanding an end to British Rule of India. The session began on the August 7th and concluded post midnight of August 8 at Gowalia Tank Maidan, Bombay. In a speech entitled, “Do or Die” given on by Gandhi ji, he urged the masses to act as an independent nation and not to follow the orders of the British. Mahatma Gandhi was arrested the same night and almost the entire Congress leadership was put into confinement in less than 24 hours after the former’s speech. As the dawn broke out on August 9, all the prominent Congress leaders were arrested and there was no one to lead the movement.
Due to the arrest of major leaders, a young and relatively unknown Auna Asaf Ali presided over the AICC session on August 9, 1942. Despite the police warning, large crowd had gathered at Gowalia Tank Maidan and Aruna Asaf Ali hoisted the Indian Flag.
The Movement assumed significance as it placed the demand for independence on the immediate agenda of the national movement. Quit India Movement was a crucial phase in our freedom struggle. It strengthened the resolve for freedom from the British. The main stage of success was support of the people, whole country stood united in this struggle.
Our Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, wants the nation to revive the Quit India spirit. In a recent ‘Mann Ki Baat speech, he urged his countryman to fight communalism, casteism and poverty. So, let’s start a revolution with August 2017 and say,

Dirtiness Quit India, Poverty Quit India, Corruption Quit India, Terrorism Quit India, Casteism Quit India, Communalism Quit India. Today we don’t need ‘Do or Die’ Mantra. But, determination to create New India.

Speaker: Ms. Shubhangi Sood & Ms. Priya Gulshan
